Army jails colonel 7 years for defrauding Bayelsa Govt

The Nigerian Army yesterday convicted one of its officers for defrauding the Bayelsa State Government. The officer identified as Lieutenant Colonel David Ahangba was found guilty of two-count charge out of the four counts for which he was initially charged and was subsequently handed a seven year jail sentence.

Delivering judgement at the end of its sitting in Lagos, President of the Court Martial, Brigadier General Edward Nze said the officer should also refund the sum of N150million to the Bayelsa State Government.

Usher’s 5 year old son hospitalized after nearly drowning in the pool

Usher’s eldest son, 5 years old Usher Raymond V, has been hospitalized following an accident in the singer’s pool yesterday.

According to TMZ, the little boy was playing in the pool with his aunt when he dove under water to retrieve a toy from the drain. His arm then got stuck in the drain, and neither his aunt nor a maid could free him.
Fortunately, two men who had been working in the house reportedly came out when the maid screamed for help; they were able to get the child’s arm unstuck.

After a phenomenal rise to global fame, Nollywood celebrated its 20th anniversary recently. It ought to be a time to dance probably round the year, but things are far from being very rosy for the industry at present. Among other issues, piracy, absence of  structured distribution networks and a string of scandals trailing some of its starplayers are threatening to rob Nollywood of its glory. While these issues are not new, they have taken a toll on the fortunes of some actors and actresses.

Before now, one area where a good number of the screen stars had found consolation is that of endorsements by corporate organisations, especially telecom giants that include Globacom and MTN. But the business world is fast shifting its love to musicians. Only last week, Globacom dropped some of its Nollywood ambassadors, after settling  for a crop of Nigerian singers. For some, it is a pointer to the fact that the organisation may have realised that musicians, rather than actors, have more influence on young people in Nigeria at the moment.

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigations into the killing of a police corporal, Ado Ayuba, who was lynched by some hoodlums in Suru Alaba area of the state.

According to the police, the victim was beaten to death by an irate mob for allegedly killing a trader, Mustapha Mohammed, on July 30, 2013.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ayuba and another policeman were deployed to the scene to chase away traders who had illegally taken over a portion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Ademola Fashola, father of the Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola, is dead.

He died this morning in Lagos. He has been ill. Last year, he was flown to the United States for medical treatment in the heat of the Lagos Doctors’ strike.

Kenyan lawyer sues Israel for killing Jesus

The state of Israel is being sued by a Kenyan lawyer in the International Criminal Court of Justice (ICJ) for the “trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ,” which the lawyer claims was “unlawful,” according to regional media reports.

Kenyan lawyer Dola Indidis says that Israel and the Jewish people should be held legally liable for Jesus’s death, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Indidis, who has taken his case the ICJ in The Hague, is also suing Tiberius, the emperor of Rome in 42 BCE, “Pontius Pilate, a selection of Jewish elders, King Herod, the Republic of Italy, and the State of Israel,” according to the Post.

Indidis is using the Bible as his primary piece of evidence against Israel.

Grandmother sells Daughters baby for N200k in Jos

An eight-month-old baby, Chiamaka Obinna, who was allegedly sold by her grandmother for N200,000 and taken from Jos to Onitsha, has been found about one week later and re-united with her mother.

It was gathered that the baby’s grandmother (names withheld), who lived at Rukuba Road by Grafitti Hotel in Jos had on July 19, this year, sent her daughter, who is the mother of the baby on an errand and sent away her other children apparently to pave way for her to dispose of the baby.

Thereafter, some women came to her house and she allegedly gave the baby to them. Unknown to her, some of the neighbours saw her remove the baby from her back and handed her over to the strangers.
