Obama pardons and shortens terms for 214 prisoners; 67 had life sentence
US President Obama commuted the sentences of 214 federal prisoners
Wednesday, the largest single-day grant of commutations in the nation's
history. He has 562 total commutations during his presidency — most of
which have come in the past year . Obama has now used his constitutional
clemency power to shorten the sentences of more federal inmates than 9
past presidents combined.
The early release of the 214 prisoners, mostly low-level drug offenders and non violent offenders, is part of Obama's effort to correct what he views as unreasonably long mandatory minimum sentences to those inmates. Some date back decades, including 71-year-old Richard L. Reser of Sedgwick, Kan., who was given a 40-year sentence for dealing methamphatamine and firearm possession in 1989. He'll be released Dec. 1.

Are Christians Second Class Citizens in Nigeria? - By Femi Fani-Kayode
I am glad that Father Mbaka of the Catholic Church has finally seen the light and that he has denounced the Buhari regime. This coming from a man that once supported the President vigorously, even when members of his own flock and faith were being slaughtered, marginalised and humiliated, is cheery news.
Yet there are still many more Church leaders that supported the Buhari government, that sold their souls to the devil and that need to follow Mbaka's example and recant.
The great philosopher, writer and intellectual Mr. Dante Alighieri once said that "the hottest place in hell is reserved for those who maintain their neutrality at a time of moral crisis".
To add to this it was our very own Professor Wole Soyinka, the distinguished Nobel Laureate, that said "the man died in him who remained silent in the face of tyrrany".

Islam is not a terrorist Religion-Pope Francis
Speaking aboard a plane taking him back to Rome after a five-day trip to
Poland, Pope Francis said it would be unfair to label Islam as
terrorism. When asked by reporters why he never mentions Islam when
condemning terrorism or violence, especially in the wake of brutal
murder of a Catholic priest in France and other recent attacks in Europe
claimed by the Islamic State group, he said,
"It's not true and it's not correct to say Islam is terrorism. It's not right to identify Islam with violence. I believe that in every religion there is always a little fundamentalist group. I don't like to talk of Islamic violence because every day, when I go through the newspapers, I see violence, this man who girls his girlfriend, another who kills his mother-in-law. And these are baptized Catholics. If I speak of Islamic violence, then I have to speak of Catholic violence. Not all Muslims are violent".

Man chops off wife's hands for not conceiving after seven years of marriage
A 34-year-old Kenyan man allegedly chopped off
the hands of his wife of seven years with a large knife because she cannot
have children, in what is said to be the most atrocious cases of
domestic violence.
28-year-old
Jackline Mwende from Kathama Village, Masii in Machakos County, had her
hands chopped off at the wrist by her husband, Stephen Ngila Thenge (right) on
July 24.
She is also
nursing injuries on her head and neck from the gruesome attack.
Relatives say the couple had been having issues and Ms Mwende wanted
to leave her husband but was advised against it by "their pastor"
Ms Mwende, who
spoke told the Nation Kenya at her father's Kathama home, where she
now stays after her discharge from the hospital on Friday, July 29, said
that before the
attack, they had separated for about three months over failure to have
children
"I could not understand why he was blaming me yet we had gone to hospital last year and the doctors had said he was the one with issues, which could be corrected," she said. She said her husband, a tailor at Masii town, refused to follow up on treatment.
"He moved out of our house three months ago and came back
on Sunday (July 24) at around 8.30pm. When I opened the door, he said
‘today is your last day’ and started slashing me with the panga."
Ms Mwende called out for help but the man fled before neighbours arrived.
"They were all afraid of touching me, they thought I was dead. I was
rushed to Machakos Hospital where I was given painkillers and got a
blood transfusion. I was discharged on Friday."
Shocked villagers described Mr Thenge is a very "polite man". The man was arrested on Monday July 25 in Machakos town
hours after he fled his home in Masii.
Ms Mwende's jobless parents are now appealing for help to take care of their child.
